There are a number of available technology options for faculty to administer and proctor tests and quizzes. Faculty should consider the features of each option to determine which is best suited for their teaching and learning context.
Self-Service Scantron Machines
Instructors can administer traditional in-person tests using machine-readable scantron bubble sheets. Scantron desktop scanners, located at the Homer Babbidge Library, allow instructors to provide answer keys, scan their tests, and have the results and other associated data returned electronically. Open-note Remote Testing with Live Proctoring
Instructors create and deploy a test within HuskyCT and proctor students in-person or via video conferencing. If administered remotely, students join a video conferencing session created by the instructor, enabling instructors and students to communicate during the testing window if needed. This method does not utilize any of the available testing security measures and is recommended for tests in which access to external resources is not a concern.
BYOD – Bring Your Own Device
UConn’s laptop mandate requires students to own or obtain a device to complete assignments or tests. As such, instructors can administer in-person exams in which students bring a laptop/tablet to the classroom. To ensure academic integrity, tests/quizzes can be deployed in HuskyCT utilizing LockDown Browser, which limits a device’s functionality to the test only. Proctoring should be conducted live by instructors/TAs. With Lockdown Browser, the number of students taking the test in the testing location would be limited only by having sufficient in-person proctors.
Respondus LockDown Browser + Monitor
Instructors can have students take HuskyCT tests/quizzes asynchronously and remotely by utilizing Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor to establish a secure testing environment. LockDown Browser restricts laptop or iPad functionality during the testing window. Monitor confirms student identity and records students and their surroundings with the device’s webcam and microphone. This fully automated system places no restrictions on the number of test takers, but does require students to find a quiet, well lit location and have a fully functional device. Upon test completion, Monitor provides a recording of each student and an AI generated report that flags any instances of potential concern. Instructors/TAs can review flags and recordings and determine if action is needed. The recordings provide support in cases of academic dishonesty disputes. Respondus LockDown Browser + Live Proctor
LockDown Browser + Live Proctor allows an instructor to administer a test remotely while proctoring test takers via video conferencing. Using LockDown Browser to restrict device functionality, students join a video conference meeting link (Collaborate or Teams) from within HuskyCT. After confirming that students’ webcams are on and microphones are unmuted, the instructor provides a start code and students begin the test with the video conferencing running in the background. The instructor/TAs should monitor student activity during the testing window. This option is recommended for small class sizes only.
